It was not really that long ago that hippies and tree huggers were the only ones to show concern regarding the well-being of the environment. That’s a thing of the past now, with everyone being aware of the problems besetting the planet and the shared responsibility we have for turning things around. The experts are agreed that we are unable to adjust things for the better without everyone’s active contribution. This needs to happen soon and living in methods more friendly to the environment should become a mission for every individual family. The kitchen area is a good place to start saving energy by going more green.

Refrigerators and freezers use a lot of electricity, especially if they are not working as efficiently as they should. You can certainly save up to 60% on energy whenever you get a new one, in comparison to those from longer than ten years ago. The correct temperature for food is 37F inside the fridge and 0F in the freezer, and sticking to these will use a lesser amount of electricity. Another way to save electricity is to keep the condenser clean, because the motor won’t have to run as often.

As you can see, there are lots of little items that you can do to save energy, and also save money, in the kitchen alone. It is pretty easy to live green, of course. A lot of it really is merely making use of common sense.

Steps to make Fruit Tart (courtesy of Paula Deen):
  1. In food processor mix flour and powder sugar until combined. Food processor still going, slowly add your butter. Once dough is formed into a ball it's done - - Press dough onto bottom and up the sides of a tart pan (mine is a 12in pan)- I also poke holes thru out the bottom with a fork so the crust doesn't puff up - - Bake at 375°F for about 15mins or until golden brown. Cool
  2. In bowl, beat cream cheese on medium speed until smooth. Add sugar and vanilla and beat on medium speed until well combined - - Once crust/pastry is cool add your filling and spread evenly on to the bottom of the crust (filling will look like it won't be enough but I promise it will be)
  3. Add your fruit as desired on top and chill for a couple hours! :)
